OpINION: Energy Secretary

The Houston Chronicle, Nov. 25, 2024

Regarding “Chris Wright is Trump’s pick for energy secretary. Here’s what he said about Houston and Texas,” (Nov. 19): Donald Trump’s pick for Energy Secretary is a win for every Texan.

Nominee Chris Wright is a pragmatic leader in the domestic energy industry who recognizes the real human need for affordable, reliable energy. Texas homes, businesses and hospitals require Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a host of technologies 24/7. Boosting oil and gas production, which would be a boon to the Lone Star State, is the most proven way to keep costs low and lights on.

The previous administration put its green energy policy ahead of the needs of the American people. They wanted us to rely on intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar, but life is not intermittent.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas forecasted that we’ll need 76% more gigawatts by 2030. We cannot add by subtracting. In other words, to add more power, we’ll need to add more energy and we should do that with fossil fuels and carbon capture. As the home of the energy capital of the world, no state knows what works better than Texas.

We can power our communities and explore innovative energy solutions, like carbon capture, simultaneously. Texas leaders would be well-served by working with fellow energy experts such as Wright to provide our communities the energy they need now — and in the future.
